And of course moving large files between them is now a lot faster.Lastly, despite its 12V DC adapter, it is a low energy consumption product, judging by its temperature after 24 hours uptime: surprisingly cool, almost warm (barely perceptible). All three PCs having Gigabit capability in my home network immediately recognized the new 1GB bandwidth limit. My ADSL modem, located next to it, is a lot warmer in comparison. This excellent Ethernet Switch fully lives up to any expectations related to its prestigious manufacturer.Metal body: heavy, solid, durable-looking.Setup time: zero. Problems/bugs: zero.
My SD2008v3 runs cool to the touch, very quiet (no fan), and has had no problems. I had a SD2005 (the 5-port versionof the SD2008) v2 suddenly fail (no link on any ports) after 1 year, and Cisco issuedan RMA and sent me a new SD2005 v3 switch, and I've had no problems with it. Version v3 fixes the well known problems of v1 - noisy fan, no jumbo frame support. Also fixes v2.X issue of overheating. The SD2008 has gotten some justifiably badreviews based on the earlier v1 & v2.x designs.
As for linksys/cisco support, not a good experience.I would say stay away from these "small business" linksys switches. I bought this SD2008 switch and I had trouble from the beginning.Connected PC with gigabit eithernet, Linkstation with gigabit port, and a couple of other laptops.Could not get all to connect to my router. Very weird.I got it only to work with only 2 devices, at 100MB, so I just let it be.Finally it stopped working all together after 16 months.
My only real negative point is that it does not indicate connection speed on the ports - I am at a loss to why they would not put that on the unit. I would have not bought this switch after reading the reviews here and gone for the DLink however I had got this as a gift. I think if I was actually buying a switch I probably would not get this one. There is no way to check on the unit itself and you have to go to the connected devices to check speed. I have v3 and so far it seems to be working well. It is well built with metal construction and seems to run cool.
This is not a complicated device; it's there to allow fast speed connection between your Gigabit Ethernet ports on your computers. It does its job and that's all there is to it. And it does it well. You can rely on Cisco. Once I plugged it in, it's been working like a charm.
